Nosebleed Instructions
- If packing has been inserted, follow the physicianâs instructions for removal.
- If no packing was left in your nose:
- Do not disturb the clot that has formed.
- Rest with your head elevated.
- Do NOT blow your nose or bleeding may reoccur.
- It is normal to see mucous discharge mixed with old blood for a few days. Wipe gently with tissue.
- Avoid sneezing. If you have to sneeze, expel the sneeze through your open mouth.
- Avoid lifting, bending over and any strenuous exertion for the first few days.
- Avoid alcohol, aspirin and aspirin products for 5 days.
- Avoid hot drinks.
- Use of a humidifier or vaporizer may be helpful.
- Keep you follow-up appointment with your physician as instructed.
- If bleeding starts again:
- Sit with your head slightly forward and squeeze the lower half of your nose between your thumb and index finger.
Keep pressure on for 10 minutes. If pressure by squeezing is not hard enough, bleeding may not stop.
- An ice compress on the outside of your nose may help.
- If bleeding continues, call you doctor and or go to an emergency facility
